Continuum: Contemporary Ceramics in Historical Context
The exhibition is an exploration of the continuing themes and traditions evident in the works of contemporary ceramic artists. Presenting the work of eight Virginia potters, the installation juxtaposes their newly-created ceramics with historical works from the museum’s permanent collection and highlights the continuum of clay traditions that go back more than 25,000 years. The artists were invited to find resonances with specific objects in the collection to create new works for this exhibition. Focused on a range of possible connections, such as theme, symbol, technique, shape, firing, decoration, and glazing, the exhibition emphasizes the profound continuity of ceramics through the centuries.
Organized by the University of Richmond Museums, the exhibition was curated by Richard Waller, Executive Director, University Museums, in collaboration with Stephen Addiss and Randy Edmonson.
