Two Decades: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center is on view in the Modlin Center for the Arts Atrium and Booker Hall at the University of Richmond, August 19, 2021, through July 7, 2022.

Inaugurated on September 22, 2001, the Harnett Print Study Center opened with generous funding from Joel and Lila Harnett of Phoenix, Arizona. Dedicated to the study, collection, and exhibition of works on paper, the Center provides direct involvement with original works of art on paper, including prints, drawings, paintings, and photographs.

As part of the museum’s mission, the Harnetts established the Harnett Summer Research Fellowship. The fellowship gives University of Richmond students the opportunity to work alongside University Museums staff to research and curate special exhibitions selected from the permanent collection.

This exhibition focuses on the cumulative work of the twenty students that have been awarded the Harnett Fellowship since 2001. Each piece has been selected by a Fellow to represent the exhibition they curated. The seemingly disparate pieces coalesce to create an intricate narrative that highlights the experience of the past fellows. Two Decades adds meaning to the pieces displayed and integrates the identity of each Harnett Fellow and their personal connection to the art work.

The exhibition celebrates a milestone for the Harnett Print Study Center and the achievements of the Harnett Fellows. The establishing of this summer research has given undergraduate students the opportunity to develop tangible and professional skills to prosper in the arts and various professional fields. Although the fellows have dispersed into different career-oriented fields and locations, the exhibition creates an ongoing connection for them through art.

The fellows include, Olivia Kohler-Maga (’03), Christopher Oliver (’05), Lindsay Kurlak (’05), Bradley Ferrani (’06), Carmen Hermo (’07), Dina Zhurba (’10), Katie Der (’11), Kim Ray (’12), Dayle Wood (’11), Jacqueline Clary (’12), Haley Jones (’14), Lourdes Figueroa (’13), Mimi King (’15), Sequioa Roscoe (’16), Carly Cahill (’16), Sofia Nicolet (’19), Morgan Mitchell (’20), Kate Wiley (’20), Junru Zhou (’21), and Hadley Beckstrand (’22).
