The University of Richmond Museums presents Lasting Impressions: Celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center, on view September 27 to December 8, 2006. Installed concurrently in the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art and the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center, the exhibition highlights the concentrated areas of strength within the museum's collection and offers a wide range of holdings and treasures from historical to contemporary works on paper. The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Joel Harnett for his generosity and nurturing of the museums at the University of Richmond.
About the exhibition
Lasting Impressions celebrates the fifth anniversary of the Harnett Print Study Center and highlights works on paper from the collection of more than six thousand objects. Divided into two parts, the presentation in the Harnett Print Study Center focuses on five artists-- Stefano della Bella (Italian, 1610-1664), Pierre Daura (American, born Spain, 1896-1976), Andreas Feininger (American, born Germany, 1907-1999), Hans Friedrich Grohs (German, 1892-1981), and J.J. Lankes (American, 1884-1960)--representing defined areas of strength within the collection. The selection in the Harnett Museum of Art illustrates the depth and breadth of the museum's collection, including Albrecht Dürer's The Monstrous Pig of Landser (1496), Francisco de Goya's Valor Varonil de la Célebre Pajuelora en la Zaragoza (1816), Auguste Rodin's Le Printemps (1883), Pablo Picasso's, Scene d'Interieur (1926), and Roy Lichtenstein's Untitled 5: For Meyer Schapiro Portfolio (1974).

Inaugurated on September 22, 2001, the Harnett Print Study Center opened with generous funding from Joel and Lila Harnett of Phoenix, Arizona. Joel Harnett (1926-2006), a University of Richmond graduate (RC'45), was a former vice president of Look magazine and founder of Media Horizons, a public radio broadcasting and magazine company. Harnett served on the board and executive committee of the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Lila Harnett is the founder of ArtTable, a national organization of professional women leaders in the visual arts, a former critic with CUE magazine, a member of the New York State Council on the Arts for eight years, and currently on the board of the Phoenix Museum of Art.

The Harnett Print Study Center is the only facility in the region dedicated to education, research, and exhibition of works on paper, and it extends the Museums' mission to provide a forum for the study and appreciation of the visual arts. The 1,200-square-foot amenity houses the permanent collection of prints, drawings, and photographs of the University of Richmond Museums and includes exhibition space, a secure print storage area, a seminar room for the University's art history and studio art courses, and a viewing area for prints being researched by students, faculty, and visiting scholars. The Center's first five years have been marked by tremendous growth in the collection and a remarkable impact as one of the University's premier museums.

To coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Harnett Print Study Center, the University of Tampa Press, Florida, is publishing a new limited edition book: A WOODCUT MANUAL by J.J. Lankes, with Selected Letters and Other Writings, edited with an introduction and commentary by Welford Dunaway Taylor. Signed copies will be available from September 27 to December 8, 2006.

Lasting Impressions: Celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of the Joel and Lila Print Study Center was organized by the University of Richmond Museums, the exhibition was co-curated by Richard Waller, Executive Director, University of Richmond Museums and Carmen Hermo, '07, art history and English majors, University of Richmond, and 2006 Harnett Summer Research Fellow.
