Going with the Flow: Prints by Pat Steir
August 21 to December 15, 2002
Marsh Art Gallery,
University of Richmond Museums

Going with the Flow: Prints by Pat Steir includes four prints by Steir (American, born 1940), published by Crown Point Press, San Francisco, in 1993. Known for her unique painterly style resembling waterfalls, the prints in this exhibition maintain her gestural application of color while also displaying an overall lushness and more focused compositional direction. Their titles extend the artist’s reference to nature in her work — Peony, Evening, Fern, and Radish make up this grouping of four prints. Much of her work can be seen as a feminist take on the gestural aspect of the earlier male-dominated “action painting” of Abstract Expressionism that was a powerful influence, but it also reflects a lifelong interest in Asian art and philosophy.
