HPSC@15: A Celebration of the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center is on view from September 22, 2016 to April 14, 2017, at the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center, University of Richmond Museums. With works representing each of the twenty-six exhibitions that have been on view at the Print Study Center during its first fifteen years, the exhibition showcases prints, drawings, and photographs from the collection. In addition to drawings, paintings, and photographs, the exhibition presents various printmaking methods such as etching, lithography, screenprinting, and woodcuts. Highlights of the exhibition include Elm Leaf by Andreas Feininger (American, 1906-1999), Disparate de miedo (Folly of Fear) by Francisco de Goya (Spanish, 1746-1828), Tattoo-Shave-Haircut by Reginald Marsh (American, 1898-1954), The Flying Lesson by Robert ParkeHarrison (American, born 1968), Scene d’interieur by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973), and Night by George Tooker (American, 1920-2011).

About the exhibition

Founded on September 22, 2001, the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center houses the permanent collection of works on paper of the University of Richmond Museums and serves as a research center for the study and exhibition of prints, drawings, and photographs. With more than 6,500 works on paper in the collection by artists from the fifteenth century to the present, the Center promotes exposure to original works of art to the University’s students, faculty, and staff as well as the Richmond community and the region. Through research, programs, publications, and exhibitions, the Harnett Print Study Center encourages the study and appreciation of works on paper and the visual arts. The museum was made possible through generous funding from the late Joel (RC’45) Harnett and Lila Harnett of phoenix Arizona. Since its founding, the Center has been an essential part of the mission of the University of Richmond Museums.

Organized by the University of Richmond Museums, the exhibition was co-curated by Richard Waller, Executive Director, University of Richmond Museums, and Carly E. Cahill, 2016 Harnett Summer Research Fellow, University Museums.
